Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation completes what was begun in our Baptism.

In the Confirmation ceremony the Bishop calls upon the Holy Spirit to strengthen our faith and our commitment to following Christ by the laying on of hands and anointing with sacred Crism. The ceremony takes place in the parish church attended by family and fellow parishioners.

Confirmation is the second step in the process of our initiation into the Church. Most people today experience the Sacrament after receiving their First Communion. However, it is only since the early 20th century that the Sacrament in the Roman rite came to be administered after First Communion. In other rites, the Sacrament is conferred after Baptism and before First Communion.

In this diocese, Confirmation is conferred on young people of secondary school age. Anyone – young person or adult – wishing to receive the Sacrament is invited to contact the parish priest.
